REPORT | Crook Town 1-2 West Allotment Celtic

Updated: Apr 3, 2022

Scott McCarthy returned to the West Allotment side for the first time since his red card last month at Seaham Red Star and scored a dramatic 90th minute winner to snatch all three points.

Despite the lack of chances in the first half for both sides, Matty Hayton put West Allotment 1-0 ahead on 37 minutes for his nineteenth goal of the season.

Crook battled back well in the second half and managed to grab an equaliser after 64 minutes to the delight of the 200 plus crowd - An excellent strike from David Webb from 25 yards out.

However, the drama would unfold as Scott McCarthy grabbed a goal via a header in the 90th minute after a set-piece to secure the win for Allotment.

Crook arguably came closest to taken the lead as they put the ball in the net on 11 minutes however, the assistant referee had already raised his flag for an offside in the build-up.

Allotment were awarded a corner after 18 minutes which Luke Parkinson swung into the box. Crook 'keeper Ronan Makepeace came to collect but he ended up spilling the ball and it fell to the feet of Callum Larmouth however, the striker couldn't quite guide his effort on target.

The deadlock was broken on 37 minutes via a typical West Allotment goal on the counter attack. McCarthy was through on goal inside the box and his pass/shot found Hayton who was waiting for one of his most simplest goals of the season.

4 minutes into the second half, McCarthy came close to doubling West Allotment's lead. The forward jinked and jived his way past defenders into the box before toe-poking a shot straight into the gloves of Makepeace.

On 57 minutes came one of the most crucial moments of the game as Finn Hodgson produced his save(s) of the season with an outstanding double-save to deny Crook from close range.

Despite Hodgson's heroics, there was nothing that the shot stopper could do to keep out Crook's equaliser on 64 minutes. David Webb thumped the ball into the bottom corner from distance to bring the game back all-square.

With the game approaching a conclusion, Larmouth almost grabbed a goal on 88 minutes but was only denied by the post after a zipping shot from just outside the box.

Despite the close attempt from Larmouth, it was Scott McCarthy who buried the vital goal in the final minute of the game to snatch and grab the victory for Allotment. The ball was looping in the air after a corner was swung into the box and it fell to McCarthy who headed over Makepeace into the net.

Allotment remain in 12th in the Ebac Northern League Division One after the victory but have games in hand over a couple of the teams above with a top-half finish still certainly on the cards.
