Match Preview: West Allotment Celtic vs Thornaby (03/08/21)

West Allotment Celtic head into their first home league game of the season this Tuesday evening on the back of a promising and determined performance in the season opener away at North Shields. This will also be our first competitive game in our new home.

Allotment came away with a point at the Daren Persson Stadium on Saturday afternoon and will be looking to build on that against Thornaby as there looked to be plenty of positives to take from that game. On another day, Allotment could have picked up all three points with some of the chances that came our way.

Our Opponents

Similarly, our visitors this Tuesday also walked away from their season opener with a point as they drew 1-1 at home to fellow Northern League Division One newcomers, Crook Town.

Thornaby took the lead in that game after 18 minutes courtesy of an Elliot Beddow goal. Their lead was taken away from them in the second half as Crook equalised just before the hour-mark with game ending as a draw.

In terms of last season's performances, Thornaby were sitting comfortably in 9th place with six wins from eleven games before the season was curtailed due to the ongoing pandemic. They had also played less games than some of the teams above who were three points ahead or less so there was potential for 'The Blues' to climb further up the league.

Head-to-Head

Allotment have met Thornaby in league action 12 times in the past with the first encounter taking place on the 18th of February 2006 where we held to a 2-2 draw.

Overall, Allotment have recorded 5 wins against Thornaby in those 12 league games with the last one coming in a 3-1 home win in August 2017 when we were playing at Druid Park. In more recent times, Thornaby have had the edge as they have won the last 4 meetings (including a win in the EA Memorial Cup in January 2019).

Those recent wins for Thornaby have also been rather convincing for them as well as they were 5-1, 4-0, 3-0 and 0-2 wins.

Michael Trodd remains unavailable as he still has 3 games remaining on his suspension carrying over from last season.

Striker Matty Hayton and central midfielder Gilberto Chapim are also missing.
